How to Photograph Artwork With a Digital Camera For Use on the Web

!#8# How to Photograph Artwork With a Digital Camera For Use on the Web

Getting a good digital image of artwork is very important if you want people to get the full impact of your artwork. You need to have good quality digital images of your artwork for Online Galleries, PR materials, exhibitions and galleries. Your digital images are your artwork online, so they need to look as close to the original artwork as possible. You want to make a good first impression, don't you? If you have a great piece of artwork and it looks dull, dark and gray on the computer screen, it will automatically disengage the viewer and viewers will not want to look at it, it will not interest viewers.

Equipment -

1. Camera - I use an Olympus 4.0 Megapixel digital camera which is a decent camera, but any good quality digital camera will work. Read your camera instruction guide to find all the options for taking good quality pictures. Always take high resolution .tiff pictures because you can always decrease the image quality and file size of a digital picture, but you can't start from a low resolution image and make it high resolution.

2. Lighting - You do not have to have an expensive photo lighting system or a really expensive camera, what I use is those clamp on metal reflectors that you can buy from the hardware store and I use 500 watt photo light bulbs from the camera store in the clamp on metal reflectors. I use four of these at one time.

3. Tripod - A tripod is also very helpful, but you can do without it if you have to. Use a sturdy tripod with tilt and rotation. If you don't have a tripod, make sure your shutter speed is at least 1/60 and hold the camera steady and squeeze the trigger gently.

4. Photo Editing Software - The final component is the computer software to adjust the images on the computer, I use Adobe Photoshop software which is awesome. There are many other Photo Editing software programs available, and basically you just need to be able to crop the image and adjust the colors and the lightness and darkness of your digital images.

Procedures -

1. Shoot indoors with at least two 500-watt photo flood lamps (3200K) mounted in reflectors. If your artwork is 22" x 30" or larger you should probably use four lights.

2. Put the artwork on a piece of black matte board for a background. Fasten art to the black board with double-stick tape, tacks or use a black mat. Place on the wall or on an easel or on the floor. The art must be parallel to the camera lens, the center of the lens pointing at the center of the art. Use a bubble level to be sure camera and art are level. Tape a gray/color scale next to the art so that you will have a reference for adjusting the color of your digital image.

3. Lamps should be 4-5 feet away from the art, position the lights at a 30 degree angle to the surface of the artwork and point each of the four lights to a separate corner of the artwork so that the light will evenly illuminate the entire surface of the artwork. Check to be sure there are no hot spots, shadows or shine reflecting off the art. The room should be completely dark when you shoot. Cover the windows and turn out the lights. For textured work like collage try raking the light, using just one light from the side and adjusting the exposure accordingly.

4. Fill the viewfinder or LCD (digital) with the IMAGE ONLY, centered and absolutely square to the sides, top and bottom. Move the camera or zoom lens, not the art. Focus carefully in the center of the art.

5. The best combination is a slow speed setting (1/8, 1/15, 1/30 sec.) with a high f/stop (f11 or f16) for color saturation and sharp image. If you don't have a tripod, you will need to use at least 1/60 shutter speed. The best setting for balancing the light is "tungsten" (which is the type of light bulb you will be using). Tungsten is under "white balance" in the camera settings. Change your white balance setting to tungsten, if your camera has that option.

6. Always take the highest resolution .tiff image possible (for print applications), you can always save that as a .jpg or .gif or .png for use on the web. For the web, a .gif file at 72 pixels per inch resolution is good for most web applications because it has a small file size and loads quickly.

7. Edit your digital image, in your photo editing software, so that it matches the look and feel of your artwork.

8. Organize you digital artwork files on your computer in folders so that you can easily browse to them for upload to online galleries.

Miscellaneous -

Group your artwork by size and shoot the same sizes in sequence, so you don't have to adjust the camera or easel so much. If your pieces are a standard size, place tape on the floor to mark the position of the camera, lights and easel or art stand and also the placement of the art. It will save you time when you shoot again.

Choosing a Digital SLR Camera

!±8± Choosing a Digital SLR Camera

Depending on your knowledge of cameras and maybe even your experience of digital photography and choosing a camera to fit your needs, you want to think about the type of camera that will suit your needs and creativity. You don't want to jump into an expensive SLR camera if your creativity is centered at a point and shoot level. I keep a point and shoot camera around just in case I need to shoot a quick digital photo. Most of the time I have my SLR camera with me, but the point and shoot camera is handy when I don't.

But when you get ready to take that jump up to the next level of digital cameras you want to check out the different types of cameras to see what they offer and what your needs in a camera may be. There are many quality cameras out there that shoot high quality video but that comes with a hefty price tag compared to a normal Digital SLR Camera. For instance I went from a point and shoot camera to a Canon Rebel XT which was just over three hundred and fifty dollars at the time. I used that for about a year but I really wanted a faster SLR camera, so I purchased a Canon 50D. The 50D shoots 6.3 frames per second and has a 15.1 megapixel CMOS sensor. This camera is great for sports and air shows. But unless you are in to that type of photography this may not be the camera for you. It has a price tag of about 00.00 and no video capability. But 15.1 MP gives you great resolution shots.

A year after that, I purchased a Canon 5D Mark II. I bought this camera just because I wanted a Full Frame Digital Camera. This camera is still on step behind a professional grade camera but the photographs are just as good. And this camera gives me much more versatile creativity. It also shoots video in HD uninterrupted at full 1080 resolution at 30 fps. But I didn't buy it for the video. I bought it because it was a Full Frame Digital Camera. You would think if I did my research on my camera purchases I wouldn't have ended up with to high end digital camera within a year time span. But I researched both cameras for over a month before I made any purchase. I bought the Canon 50d because that camera gives me great fast moving shots and I love shooting Air Shows. But I wanted a Canon 5D because I also like Landscape Photography. And that camera is the perfect digital camera for landscapes.

Before you buy a digital camera make sure you know what you want to be shooting and if the camera you are purchasing will give you the creativity you want. Yes I know my Canon 50d will shoot great landscapes and the Canon 5d will shoot good action shots. But there is a huge difference in the resolution of each. But you also have to remember the composition of the photograph is in the eye of the photographer. The digital camera is just a tool a photographer uses to create that great shot. But it don't hurt to be a photographer with good tools.

I am here today to make you spend in choosing a good DSLR camera without spending a fortune. So if you want to find out what DSLR would be right for you then read on.

There are many entry level cameras like the Canon EOS Rebel XS, most of Canon's entry-level model is chosen. The Rebel XS has some features andproduces great quality images.

Then there's the next camera up in the range which is the Canon Rebel T1i. This is an upgrade of the first camera mentioned and has more megapixels and the ability to record high definition videos. The Rebel T1i costs around 0 more than the first camera mentioned so if you can afford the little extra I recommend going for the Rebel T1i.

Both of the above cameras are excellent, however the camera that I'm going to recommend to you today is the Canon EOS T2i, which is an upgrade of both of the above cameras and in my opinion is much better in each and every way.

The T2i has better camera specifications and far better image quality than the above cameras. The Canon T2i also can shoot at a higher frame rate which makes capturing fast moving objects much easier than ever before.

You can't go wrong with any of the above cameras, if you're on a budget get the Rebel XS, if you can afford 0 more get the Rebel T1i and if you want a far better camera than both for only another 0 more then get the T2i.

Comparing the Nikon D3000 to a Canon 500D

!±8± Comparing the Nikon D3000 to a Canon 500D

Nikon and Canon have always been competitors in the digital imaging race for the longest time and once again, these imaging giants have come up again with their latest entry-level offerings through Canon's EOS 500D and Nikon's D3000. These cameras are mainly targeted at consumers who are ready to switch from their compact digital cameras to a DSLR.

Canon's latest entry-level model, EOS 500D has 15.1 megapixel imaging resolution using its APS-C sized CMOS sensor proves to be outstanding in low light and produces images with incredibly low noise. Nikon's D3000 starts with a conservative 10.2 megapixel but with its CCD sensor gives very good results at ISO 800. At low light shoots, the D3000 can still deliver acceptable images at ISO 1600. New budding photographers must be reminded that images with higher resolution means higher MBs hence lesser pictures on your SD.

Another feature that is commonly considered is auto-focus. Consumers who recently switched from compact are accustomed to this function and might find manual focusing a bit of a challenge on certain shooting modes. The Nikon D3000 has a new 11-point AF system with Multi-CAM 1000 autofocus sensor module giving the D3000 better frame coverage compared to previous entry-level models 3-point AF. Complimenting the AF feature is Nikon's exceptional EXPEED image processor that accurately processes images. Meanwhile, Canon 500D has precise 9-point auto-focus systems for guaranteed high-accuracy in focusing and images are processed by DIGIC 4 Imaging Processor's 14-bit A/D conversion that ensures images are processed without compromising fine details and accurate colour reproduction. An added-feature on the Canon is the capability to record videos. This is ideal for new switchers since this feature is similar to the compact digital camera. The EOS 500D offers video recording and playback in Full HD using HDMI connection. However, shooting at 1080p records gawky clips and it is recommended to use 720p which puts to waste the HD capacity.

Both cameras uses SD and SDHC compatible and they both have 3.0" LCD displays. However, only Canon has a Live View capability making shooting in awkward angles easier. One advantage that Nikon offers with the D3000 is their on-camera guide which is highly recommended for new photography enthusiasts. This feature can be selected from the top Exposure Mode/Scene Mode dial and has three sections namely 1) Shoot, 2) View / Delete and 3) Set-Up which gives teaches the user on how to set-up and use the D3000.

Comparing prices, the Canon 500D's suggested retail price of SGD,199 is for body only or SGD,099 for the EOS Kit II with 18-55mm lens while the Nikon D3000 with AF-S DX VR 18-55mm is more economical at SGD8.

These two new cameras are both user-friendly and easy to use. So choosing between these two products can be a little bit tricky, either you look for features, you consider the price or whatever your preference is - choose Nikon or Canon.

The best digital SLR for beginners may be the least expensive. But even if the potential buyer has deep pockets, the cheaper models are also the most user-friendly.

The recommendations include models from Canon and Nikon are the two most popular digital SLR manufacturers, but Pentax and Olympus digital SLR beginners also great.

Criteria for beginners "models are superb image quality, easy navigation, quick response time of the camera of the photographerActions, a good selection of lenses available and good support.

The choice of one of the most popular brands is tied to the service issue. You can access many sites and forums are the answers to your questions from like-minded photographers who are willing and able to help you find the information you need.

Since Canon and Nikon are the best seller, will have more resources, but this does not mean that there is no support for the other. The Internet is aresource fantastic tool. Even if you can not have a friend or neighbor, for the same type of camera, as you heard, the Internet is not limited to your neighborhood or your city. This is a global and comprehensive agreement.

With this in mind, here's a short list of digital SLR cameras that are good for people just getting into digital SLR photography:

Canon Rebel T2i (aka 55oD) Nikon D3100 Pentax Kx Olympus E-620

If you look at the score online at Amazon, you will see thatThese four models have quite the same high rating of about 4.6 out of 5 stars possible. This is very impressive.

The features and advantages are nearby, with the exception of the Olympus E-620 without video (all other models feature high-definition video). But the Oly has a tilting LCD screen, which is not available on other models.

The price tags are not identical with the Pentax is available in more than $ 100 less than everyone else (apart from this little camera is available in colors Sexy- Not just basic black) and Canon tops the list.

Canon EOS Rebel T1i 15.1 MP CMOS Digital SLR Camera

!±8± Canon EOS Rebel T1i 15.1 MP CMOS Digital SLR Camera

Professionals (and aspiring professional) photographers usually reflex (SLR) for greater control of the draw manual configuration. SLR cameras allow photographers to produce almost complete control of the modes, configurations and features of their cameras, the best shot possible.

One of my all time favorite SLR cameras, the Canon EOS Rebel T1i 15.1 MP CMOS Digital SLR. This new model is equipped with a wide range of functions, manythese were only on more expensive models. Here is a brief look at why the Canon EOS Rebel T1i 15.1 Megapixel CMOS digital camera is a winner.

This model features a powerful 15.1MP sensor. These high-resolution (along with the DIGIC 4) allows the accurate reproduction and natural colors on the image. The 18-55mm which is included in this model, has a good job, but 15.1MP sensor with high resolution that works best with the EF 70-200mm andother similar goals.

Regardless of the camera, I am always very grateful for a great display. The Canon EOS Rebel T1i 15.1 Megapixel CMOS digital camera features a large 3 "display, which works like a dream. The surface of the display is reflective and has a preview of sharp, even in bright sunlight and dark conditions (it adjustment of brightness).

This model is surprisingly light and feels pretty good on my grip. It has the same chassis as the XSi is a model andslightly smaller than many other SLR cameras in comparison. The keys are well positioned and users of Canon cameras have little trouble, using this model. The camera takes HD video and can also be easily connected to other devices (it comes with an HDMI port).
